Case Study

Sourcing a Metal Components Line in China and Taiwan — Without Technical Drawings

Context

A niche e-commerce brand set out to launch a new line of metal components for pressurized systems — threaded connectors and nipples, quick-disconnect couplers, cross-standard adapters, regulators and related accessories. The parts — in brass, aluminium alloy and stainless steel, some nickel-plated — spanned a wide range of standardized threads: metric, NPT, BSP/BSPP, UNF, plus bottle threads such as CGA320, DIN/W21.8 and G5/8. Several references required pressure-tight sealing (O-rings, burst disks). The target market came with specific sourcing constraints: a niche, lightly industrialized segment subject to particular regulatory constraints in China, which makes supplier identification difficult. The limited volumes planned at this stage ruled out manufacturers unfamiliar with the field, for whom the cost of process adaptation would have been prohibitive. An added challenge: no technical drawings were available. Sourcing had to be run from accurate product visuals and a functional brief focused on end use.

Approach

Manuloop ran a targeted sourcing campaign across China and Taiwan, focusing on manufacturers experienced in machining multi-standard threaded parts and handling the sealing constraints specific to pressure components. With no technical drawings available, sourcing relied on precise visual references and a functional brief — which meant identifying partners able to interpret functional intent, and to deliver the right threads and the right materials (brass, aluminium, stainless steel, nickel plating) without formal documentation. Shortlisted suppliers were assessed on their ability to quickly grasp the functional constraints, propose prototypes on short lead times, and offer pricing compatible with the low-volume launch phase.

Deliverables

- Qualified supplier panel across China and Taiwan, with documented profiles and experience assessment on threaded pressure parts - Mapping of the required thread standards — metric, NPT, BSP/BSPP, UNF, NGO, and bottle threads (CGA320, DIN/W21.8, G5/8) - Sourcing conducted without technical drawings, from visual references and functional specifications - Comparative China vs. Taiwan analysis — cost, regulatory access, lead times, flexibility - Prototype engagement with selected partners, with short-turnaround confirmation

Outcome

The client secured a panel of qualified industrial partners able to support the launch of its metal components line under viable commercial and operational conditions — despite the regulatory complexity of the Chinese market and the absence of formal technical documentation. By targeting manufacturers already familiar with this type of part — multi-standard threaded machining, brass/aluminium/stainless assemblies, pressure-tight sealing — the project avoided the cost and lead-time penalties usually tied to low-volume process adaptation, and positioned the client for a controlled launch in a highly specialized market.
