Case Study
Context
A European automotive aftermarket company sought to develop a remanufacturing range covering cooling system components — compressors, condensers, and associated parts. The ambition was to build a product offer meeting OEM-equivalent standards, both for finished products and for the critical components sourced to support the remanufacturing process. In this context, supplier selection could not rely on commercial positioning alone. IAM components had to demonstrate genuine technical equivalence to OEM parts in terms of materials, tolerances, performance, and durability — requirements that can only be verified through rigorous technical assessment, not through supplier self-declaration. The core challenge was to evaluate candidates with the precision of an engineering process, while keeping sourcing timelines compatible with product range development objectives.
Approach
Manuloop structured the evaluation in two stages, working in close collaboration with the client's R&D and engineering teams throughout. The first stage was a remote pre-qualification of a panel of candidates across Asia, based on highly specific technical and industrial criteria defined jointly with the client's engineering department. This phase focused on real manufacturing capabilities, product scope, and demonstrated experience with OEM-equivalent specifications — filtering out suppliers whose positioning did not hold up to technical scrutiny. The shortlisted suppliers then underwent on-site validation visits in Asia. These assessments went beyond standard audit checklists: manufacturing processes and critical operations were reviewed in detail, quality systems and process controls were examined for consistency, and declared specifications were cross-checked against actual production conditions. At each stage, findings were fed back to the engineering team to ensure continuous alignment between sourcing decisions and technical requirements.
Deliverables
- Pre-qualification of a panel of Asian suppliers against OEM-equivalent technical and industrial criteria - On-site validation visits for shortlisted candidates — manufacturing processes, quality systems, and specification compliance - Detailed supplier comparison across technical fit, OEM-equivalence capability, process controls, and operational risks - Structured evaluation covering two cooling system product families — compressors and condensers - Decision-ready recommendations aligned with engineering requirements to support product range development
Outcome
The client obtained a technically grounded, engineering-validated view of the supplier landscape for its cooling systems remanufacturing range — based on first-hand factory assessments rather than commercial claims. The two-stage process — remote pre-qualification followed by targeted on-site validation — concentrated effort on the most relevant candidates and reduced the technical and quality risks typically associated with IAM sourcing for OEM-equivalent applications. The client entered its product range development phase with a clear, reliable supplier shortlist and documented evidence of OEM-equivalence capability across both product families.
